Commissioner Upthegrove’s Vision For State Forests

On Sept 24th, Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Dave Upthegrove announced his plan for valuing and preserving remaining legacy forests owned by the DNR. From the announcement:

“I want to get us to the point where the value of a forest is measured not only by the lumber it can provide, but also by the carbon it stores, the habitat it provides, the water it protects, and the resilience it gives the surrounding landscape,” said Commissioner Upthegrove. “But an unfunded moratorium on the harvest of certain forests, without the tools to replace the revenue lost, will not get us there without first undermining funding for critical conservation programs.”

The Commissioner also pledged to seek full funding from the state legislature for DNR’s Trust Land Transfer Program this year. DNR will also ask the legislature to continue to provide funding from the Natural Climate Solutions Account to protect forests with high carbon, habitat and climate value. In the coming years, the Agency will seek support from legislators to stabilize funding to manage and expand the Natural Area Preserve and Natural Resource Conservation Area programs – vital tools to protect high ecological value areas.

Film Spotlight — Last Stand: Saving the Elwha River’s Legacy Forests

This short film highlights the relationship between DNR state-owned legacy forests in the Elwah River watershed on the Olympic Peninsula, timber harvesting, the salmon and what has happened since the breaching of the dam and community efforts to preserve legacy forests.

To date, community-based Friends of Elwah Forest have raised over $550,000 to purchase timber logging rights on DNR land to help save these legacy trees. Could this be a potential way for our community to save Hooven Forest legacy trees in the future?

As always, we deeply appreciate the donations from our community which are helping us organize and fund the events listed above, as well as our operating expenses to run our website and keep our corporation's 501c3 paperwork up to date. You can always donate to Friends of Hooven Forest on our homepage at www.hoovenforest.org.
